  • City Profile : Nagoya Nagoya, capital of Aichi Prefecture, is conveniently located in the very heart of Central Japan, one of the nation's key industrial zones. The fourth largest city in Japan, Nagoya forms the core of industry and tourism in the district. Industry in Nagoya originally centred around pottery-making, however is now predominantly heavy or chemical industries as the traditional light industries, producing everything from cars to cloisonné, machinery to musical instruments. Historically, Nagoya was a typical feudal castle town, built in the 16th century. Ieyasu Tokugawa (1542 - 1616), founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, built the famous Nagoya Castle as a fortified residence for his son, whose descendants continued to reside there until the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Nagoya has many scenic and historical attractions. Atsuta Shrine, Higashiyama Park (Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Higashiyama Sky Tower) and its zoo and gardens, Nagoya Port, TV Tower, Tokugawa Art Museum, the Nagoya City Science Museum, Nittaiji Temple, and subway shopping arcades are favourite sightseeing spots.
    Direction : Approx. 2 hours from the Tokyo station by JR Tokaido Shinkansen Line. 28 minutes by limited express from Central Japan International Airport (Centrair) on Meitetsu Tokoname Line.

  • Nagoya Castle Nagoya Castle Nagoya Castle, reduced to ashes during World War II, was rebuilt in its original form in 1959. It features a new five-storied Ferro concrete main donjon, mounted by a pair of golden orca. The first five floors display the art treasures that escaped the fire, while the seventh floor serves as a scenic observatory. The collection includes over 1000 fusuma-e (paintings on sliding doors) sections and ceiling-panel paintings. Open daily 9:00-16:30. Admission: ¥500.
    Higashiyama Zoo &
    Botanical Gardens
    Higashiyama Zoo Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens contain skilfully designed zoological gardens, botanical gardens, and children's playgrounds. There is an amusement park and the pencil-shaped Higashiyama Sky Tower, 134 metre-high, nearby. Open daily 9:00-16:50 except on Mon. (When Mon. falls on a national holiday, it is open and is closed the following day.) and Dec. 29-Jan. 1. Admission: ¥500.
    Nagoya TV Tower Nagoya TV Tower Nagoya TV Tower is a 180 metrehigh steel tower erected on Park Way boulevard. Its observatory, situated, which is reached by elevator, has an observation platform which provides beautiful panoramic views extending from the Japan Alps on the north to Ise Bay on the south. At the foot of the tower is Central Park, a beautiful promenade and culture centre. Open daily 10:00 22:00. Admission: ¥600 (Sakae Station on Subway Higashiyama Line).
