The Japan Golden Route is our most highly recommended sightseeing course of Japan, involving visits to Mt. Fuji and Hakone from Tokyo before taking the Tokaido Shinkansen to Kyoto. This particular course allows you a chance to explore this route while also taking a look at Magome and Tsumago, two post towns on the old Nakasendo Highway, which used to run to Edo from Kyoto.
Magome and Tsumago are two post towns that lie along the Nakasendo Highway, a route running between Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto that was established during the Edo period. Compared with the Tokaido Highway, which runs along the coast, the Naksendo Highway is a route that runs through mountainous inland regions. Magome and Tsumago prospered as post towns that were situated along this highway. Even today, the appearence of the old structures remains well-preserved. The area has been designated as a Nationally-designated Architectural Preservation Site, and attracts many tourists.

Nikko is located in the north-western part of Tochigi Prefecture, about three hours from Tokyo by car. From the 13th century, the region was originally known as a place of worship for Japanese mountain ascetics. However, it was no0t until the Toshogu Shrine was built as the burial site of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, that large numbers of people began to visit. Yomeimon Gate, which was built with the most advanced construction methods of the time, has been designated as a National Treasure.
