Many powder hunters flock to the northern island of Hokkaido each winter in search of spectacular deep powder, off-piste runs and challenging terrain. Hokkaido is the coldest and most northern Japanese island and receives some of the best snow there is. Probably the most popular resort in Hokkaido is Niseko, a resort that is fast becoming well-known with skiers and snowboarders throughout the world.

It is the perfect opportunity to soak in the steaming water and enjoy the breathtaking snow-scape. Niseko is not only well known for its powder snow but also hot springs. Hotel Niseko Ikoino-Mura is famous for its rotenburo or open-air hot spring. Furano is located in the centre of the island of Hokkaido and is an authentic Japanese town that happens to have a world class ski resort on its doorstep. One of the charms of a ski holiday in Furano is being able to explore the town, and dine and drink at the same restaurants and bars that the locals go to. There are also local events and festivals held during the winter season that will turn your ski holiday into the cultural experience of a lifetime. Other attractions around the area include a winery, cheese factory and some amazing galleries.

Furano carefully maintains its Japanese authenticity while at the same time catering to international visitors. It is well known for its stable weather and bluebird days, and because of this provides amazing panoramic views to the other side of the valley. The ski area is divided into two linked zones and has hosted 10 FIS World Cup Downhill events and 2 Snowboard World Cups. Beginners and intermediates can enjoy perfectly groomed runs, while high intermediate and advanced skiers can challenge themselves on the ungroomed powder areas and steeps. Night skiing operates on both sides of the mountain and makes for a spectacular way to spend the evening. Hakuba is arguably the most popular winter sports region in Honshu and is home to a number of snow resorts set against an impressive mountain backdrop. Nozawa Onsen village is located at the foot of Mt. Kenashi. The snow resort offers modern facilities to skiers and snowboarders but Nozawa Onsen village strives to maintain a traditional atmosphere. Naeba Ski Resort is located in Nagano and largest single ski resort in Japan. There are some long challenging runs at this resort, in addition to the multitude of family slopes and chairlifts at the foot of the mountain. Naeba has the world's longest gondola, called "Dragondla" and it is linked to Kagurai Ski Resort.
