Since 1930, Nozawa Onsen has always been at the top of the Japanese skiing scene, and more recently snowboarding has become popular in the area. It was the first place in Japan to install ski lifts and also holds numerous major skiing and snowboarding tournaments each year. Although, the snow resort of Nozawa Onsen offers modern facilities for both skiers and snowboarders, the village of Nozawa Onsen strives to maintain a traditional atmosphere. During the 1988 Nagano Olympics, Nozawa Onsen hosted the Biathlon competitions.
